Information about CATANIA Catania was born in 729 B.C. with the name Katane, that in the Sicilian language means grater, flaying knife, from the lavic ground on which it stands and it was one of the first Greek colonies of Sicily. It was conquered by the Romans in 263 B.C., who have left us some architectural ruins of the Augustan period. After the Byzantine domination there was the Arabic one and then the Norman supremacy, which brought many changes and innovations to the town. With the Aragonese the town had a period of economic recovery and cultural flourishing. The following Spanish domination and the davastating earthquake in 1693 plunged this land into a serious economic crisis. The 19th century saw a flourishing period of cultural splendour for Catania, that involved the worldly, literary, music and theatre expressions. Situated at the foot of Etna which is still active today, Catania is the second biggest and most important town in Sicily with an important industrial centre, it even has important citrus fruit centres in its district. The ancient Greeks believed that Vulcan, the god of fire, lived in Etna, as did the monster Cyclops. Today it is the largest nature preserve in Sicily, offering summer hiking and winter cross-country skiing. Catania, city of gods, Cyclops, seamen and artists, is still today a point of reference of the Mediterranean culture and tradition. This lively, nice and at the same time proud, baroque city, shows its fascinating mix of colours and beautiful buildings, the variety of the landscape and the smell of the lively alleys of the city.
